PEABODY — The customers
of Perfecto's Caffe have had their request satisfied.
|
| |
"He
has enjoyed success there and he has been asked
by his clientele for a drive-through window,"
attorney Jack Keilty told the City Council last
week, referring to Perfecto's owner Phil Jay. |
| |
The council obliged Jay's desire
and voted to grant Perfecto's the special permit
it needs to operate a drive-through. |
| |
Perfecto's,
located at 515 Lowell St., serves bagels, muffins,
sandwiches and wraps. In addition to Peabody,
there are two cafes in Andover and one in Tewksbury.
|
| |
The new drive-through will
be able to accommodate a line of at least 22 cars.
The one-way flow of traffic will proceed from
east to west with the exit near the site of Perfecto's
window. There will be an 18-foot fire lane around
the parking lot's perimeter, according to Keilty. |
| |
The
council voted 10-1 for the special permit. Councilor
Anne Manning objected. She was concerned that
Perfecto's emergency exit at the back of the shop
opened up to the drive-through line. |
| |
But
her reservations weren't shared. Councilor David
Gravel said that at some establishments customers
have to walk through a drive-through lane line
to enter. |
| |
"He's a great businessman
for the city" Councilor Michael Garabedian
said. "Really, it's a no-brainer in my eyes."
|
| |
If would be tough to deny Perfecto's
a permit given the precedent the council has set
in the neighborhood, Jim Liacos said. "We
gave it to Dunkin' Donuts," he said. "It
wouldn't be right not to give it to this shop
as well." |
| |
Councilor Dave Gamache said
he's frequented Perfecto's. "I will tell
you," he said, "if you've never had a
french toast bagel, that's the place to go." |
